We love a good pro-aging skin routine that supports health and beauty from within. But contrary to what TV ads would have you believe, it’s not all about reducing sagging skin and wrinkles. Because taking care of mature skin is also about keeping the skin resilient for faster wound healing and a strong dermal barrier for decades to come.
Here are 5 of our favourite holistic practices that work from the inside out to support skin that looks and feels great at any age...
1. Hydration, Hydration, Hydration!
Did we mention hydration?
Staying hydrated - especially in the summer - is essential for maintaining the type of moisture levels that supports the skin’s natural detoxification and keeps it looking smooth and plump.
Getting your heart pumping with a good workout boosts circulation and gets more blood, nutrients, and oxygen flowing to the skin.
Exercise can also help reduce levels of cortisol (aka the body’s stress hormone) which breaks down collagen - an essential protein for maintaining the structure and integrity of the skin.
3. Eat the rainbow
You’ve probably heard this one before - but it’s so important to make a habit of eating a variety of colours at every meal to support healthy (and beautiful) mature skin.
Fill your plate with colourful whole foods (like berries, leafy greens, root vegetables, herbs, and spices) to ensure you’re consuming plenty of antioxidants which fight off free radicals that cause cellular oxidative damage and contribute to aging.
4. Eat fats - the rich oily kind
The right type of fats can slow down signs of aging by reducing inflammation and providing essential skin nutrients like omega 3s, vitamin E, zinc, and selenium.
While we’ll always look to a healthy diet as our first port of call for good nutrition, the supplements below will help ensure you get a daily dose of the essential nutrients that protect and nurture mature skin.
Omega-3 Oils
Omega-3 fatty acids fight inflammation, boost the skin’s hydration levels, protect against dry and itchy skin, and mitigate signs of aging.
This vital protein provides structure to the skin, thickens the dermal layer, and is responsible for maintaining the skin’s smoothness, firmness, and elasticity.
Vitamin C helps brighten the complexion for a natural glow, and promotes the production of collagen which is essential for maintaining the skin’s elasticity and firmness.
One of the body’s naturally occurring trace elements, silica contributes to skin regeneration, supports hydration by binding protein molecules, and promotes the production of collagen.
This antioxidant is known to support the skin’s natural detoxification, target free radical damage, even the skin tone, and stimulate collagen production.
I am 46 and really starting the show my age, where as up to 40 every one said I looked young but not any more. Very tired skin drawn no cheek bone face. I need help in this area
Hi Mary, if you take a look at one of our recentl blog posts on inflammation it might help. I woudl suggest working with a qualified natropath of medical herbalist if you have a chronic condition like RA. It's worth getting bespoke advice. Best wishes Hannah
Doing pretty much all of those, though will look into some of the supplements you suggest, as I'm not taking Collagen (was told ingesting collagen wasn't the right way?), Silica or Co Q10 (which I've not even heard of!) Thanks for the tips!
Hi Val, strange you were told taking collage wasn't right - we find great results. Also taking hyaluronic acid can make a huge difference in skin quality...
Thanks
