What a smart wine! Biodynamically DEMETRE certified since 1998 with organic practises since 1975, this ‘Janus’ chardonnay is minimal intervention at its best. Spontaneous and naturally fermentated from the indigenous yeast on the grapes and within the microflora of the winery, it is matured for 9 months in concrete tanks, then bottled with minimal filtering to retain the vineyard character. No added sulphur, no added anything – a true expression of vineyard to bottle. Brioche complexity with balanced acidity, Janus matches beautifully with Bantry bay seafood, mushroom dishes and stinky cheese.

All those who attended the Ballymalloe Lit Fest and got to taste all these magnificent wines will know this is a beautifully curated wine. A Biodynamic certified minimal intervention wine, this now a 7 years old 2010 vintage, and is a delight. 80% merlot balanced with a little cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc, it shows tobacco, Morello cherry and velvety tannins. Perfect with roasted lamb, vegetarian moussaka or on its own with a selection of Irish artisan cheese, each vintage is named specifically. No added sulphur, spontaneous fermentation, handpicked and hand de-stemmed, crushed by foot – truly as natural as you could possibly get!

Domaine de L’Ecu has been certified organic since 1972 and certified biodynamic since 1998. With these mindful practices they are producing some very interesting and delicious wines, with minimal intervention. Made in a gravity fed winery, without the use of pumps, the whole bunches of Muscadet are pressed and left to naturally ferment on lees in underground concrete tanks, covered with glass tiles, for 14 months. This has an exceptional weight, slight brioche and light lemon tart. A superb wine for oysters, grilled scallops, Miyazaki Japanese and takes on mushrooms and miso well.

Diwald's ‘Alte Weingarten’ Grüner Veltliner 2013. A stunning wine. Viscous, luscious lemon tart and brioche, this is Grüner Velliner on steroids! 12%, Grown on the 'old vineyard', a plot on the southern side of Großriedenthal with records dating back to the Middle Ages, its loamy löss soil is prized for exceptional Grüner Veltliner. Martin selects the very best grapes he can find for this wine, harvesting late into October. Spontaneous natural fermentation takes place in old earthenware vessels followed by rest for two months in acacia wood barrels. Off-dry with 1gm/L residual sugar, it pairs well with tuna sashimi, caramelised scallops and creamy mushroom tagliatelle. If you love great German Riesling, give this wine a go.

This Viento Aliseo Temperanillo- Petite Verdot is a great value biodynamic wine from the northern part of the larger La Mancha Region in the middle of Spain. This region sees the very extremes of temperature from super cold winter to the warmest summers, which give this wine its special characteristics. With dark stone fruits, tobacco and super-dark chocolate but velvety tannins, it is a great wine for BBQ’s, tomato rich pasta dishes, washed-rind cheese – a fabulous mid-week wine. This producer is certified biodynamic as with all the wines from Dominio de Punctum. The vineyards are treated as an ecosystem full of life and they work together with the ecosystem, respectful of the natural life cycle of the vines throughout the year. This enhances the wines characteristics and achieves the highest quality grapes and in the wines.

A velvety blend of organic grapes from the Pay d’HErault region of the Langeudoc in southern France. With Morello cherry, slight tobacco and warm spice, this is a great wine for pizza, spicy tomato pasta dishes and BBQ’s. The blend of grapes gives the small bit of shiraz in this wine a warmth without being overwhelming.
