Essential oils are all essentially the same, right?
In fact, no, there's a huge spectrum! Thankfully, there's growing awareness about the potential harm that synthetic essential oils pose, but when it comes to natural essential oils, what does one look for?
You can't do much better than a professional NYC perfumer whose 20+ years of speciality was the world of naturals.
Meet Benoit: Owner, Founder & Professional Nose of The Nature of Things
A Frenchman by birth, Benoit's career had him living in the Big Apple for two decades, where his job was to select the best quality natural essential oils for perfumers to use in their scents.
During his career, he forged deep connections within the world of natural essential oils. So, when he fell in love with an Irish woman and chose to relocate to Dublin, he also decided to start his own business, where he put his perfumer experience to work in a new way.
Introducing The Nature of Things
The Nature of Things came into existence in 2018 and began with a simple line of fifteen essential oils. "I wanted to show the Irish consumer that I could bring really high-quality oils to the market.", says Benoit.
The brand has now expanded to include many more scents, as well as speciality products such as room sprays, body sprays, and roll-ons.
Selecting quality essential oils
Benoit places great emphasis on choosing the highest grade essential oils he can find. In doing so, he considers not just the relationship he has with producers, but their social integrity, impact on community, and even the topography and climate of the area they're producing in.
Just the same way sommeliers consider how light levels and rainfall might impact the taste of a wine on any given year, so Benoit considers his essential oils.
"I was very particular about working with distillers that I have known for a long, long time", says Benoit. He gives the example of lavender, which he says is consistently one of the most popular oils in their line. "France, of course, is the big producer. Now, you can grow lavender all over Western Europe, and the US now, but you kind of start learning about the qualities depending on where they grow. Some will develop certain attributes."
Decreasing the brand's carbon footprint is a matter at the forefront for Benoit, too. The Nature of Things is a member of One Per Cent for the Planet, meaning 1% of all sales go towards charities that protect biodiversity efforts around the globe.
