Tallow-based skincare? In a health food shop? Hands up - this one is not for the vegetarians or vegans among us. And I’ll admit, when we first agreed to have samples sent in, there was a fair bit of apprehension among the team. Mostly about one thing: what on earth were these products going to smell like?
First Impressions - Scent & Texture
When the Ancestral Cosmetics samples arrived, we shared them out among the team. The Irish company was very generous (perhaps knowing that once we tried them, we’d want more). And as it turns out, our fears were completely misplaced. The scents are gorgeous - rich, earthy and subtle, thanks to real essential oils rather than synthetic fragrance, and even the essential oil free options are surprisingly scentless.
Their creams are whipped, giving them a pleasantly mousse-like texture that’s super easy to apply, while the balms are more solid at cooler temperatures, but they melt beautifully in the warmth of your hands and absorb into the skin without leaving that greasy, sticky feeling you might expect.
After a few weeks of testing, the feedback was so consistently positive that we decided to take the leap and welcome Ancestral Cosmetics onto our shelves at Organico.
A Return to Traditional Skincare & Why it Works
Ancestral Cosmetics is a relatively new Irish skincare brand, built around the use of Irish beef tallow from naturally raised cattle. The tallow is processed in a traditional, low-heat way and blended with only fully natural, active ingredients.
In a skincare world saturated with flashy marketing, complicated formulations and long ingredient lists, this brand stands out by returning to what nature - and history - have already shown to work.
Historically, tallow was widely used in skincare and soap-making. Its structure is remarkably similar to our own skin’s natural oils, which may help explain why it feels so nourishing and comforting when applied.
Tallow is naturally rich in fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E and K, along with beneficial fatty acids that support the skin barrier - something many modern products attempt to replicate synthetically.
My Personal Testimonial
When I first heard about tallow-based skincare, I wasn’t fully convinced. However, after using the Tallow & Honey Balm for about a month, my skin is genuinely loving it.
I’ve used it on inflamed, sore patches where it felt incredibly soothing and supportive. I’m now using it on my face every evening; it’s rich and calming, and it completely relieves that tight, dry-skin feeling that can linger through the winter months.
I recently had an eye infection, and the eye-wash left the skin around my eye red and very sore. I tried an expensive eye cream I’d been using but it stung so much I had to wash it off immediately. The tallow and honey balm soothed it right away though, and the redness was gone overnight.
Transparency and Sourcing
One of the things I really appreciate about Ancestral Cosmetics is their transparency. A quick look at their Instagram or Facebook pages gives a clear sense of how and why they make their products.
The tallow they use is a by-product of the meat industry - something that would otherwise go to waste. They describe it as being sourced locally from cows raised using regenerative agriculture, with no grains, antibiotics or hormones, and no pesticides or synthetic fertilisers in the soil - cows raised as nature intended.
While the tallow isn’t certified organic, the brand has chosen to prioritise Irish sourcing and traditional farming practices. We like the fact it’s upcycled and that they have a strict ‘natural only’ ingredients rule.
Team Feedback: Real Results
Interestingly, it turned out that one of our team members had been using a homemade tallow balm for years and already knew how well her skin responded to it. Very quickly, others wanted to try the products too.
Several people with very dry or problematic skin reported that their skin felt calmer, softer and more comfortable. Others simply loved the way the balm felt - nourishing without being heavy.
The Original: Tallow & Honey Balm
The hero product in the range is the Tallow & Honey Balm. Made with tallow, raw honey, beeswax and olive oil, it’s designed to deliver deep, protective moisture. It can be used on the face or body and is suitable for all ages, making it a real multi-purpose staple.
It comes in both scented and unscented versions - ideal, as some people adore essential oils while others have very sensitive skin that reacts to them.
Exploring the Range
As well as the Tallow & Honey Balm, we stock several of their other products, including a luscious Body Cream (which also comes in an unscented option). The Body Cream has a completely different texture to the balm - lighter and more mousse-like. Made from tallow, jojoba oil and beeswax, it’s been particularly popular for dry, problem-prone skin, with some of our team reporting significant improvements in eczema patches.
The Clarifying Cream is gorgeous - containing tallow and black seed oil, it’s very calming and healing for breakouts and redness of any kind.
“Nature’s Botox”? Drop In & See for Yourself
When you look up their reviews, ‘Nature’s alternative to Botox’ comes up a lot - hence the title of this article! I’ve never been attracted to botox, but we all like our skin to feel softer, more moist and brighter, and I certainly find the Tallow & Honey Balm has more than made my skin happy.
Tallow-based skincare may seem unconventional at first, but for us, it ticks many important boxes: traditional, honest ingredients, minimal processing, excellent skin compatibility and real results. Sometimes, looking back is exactly how we move forward - and that’s why we’re delighted to stock Ancestral Cosmetics at Organico.
Their products have been flying off our shelves since we got them in during the winter. If you’d like to test them for yourself, pop in - we have testers on the shelf of all of the products - and let us know what you think!
