Rosehip Oil: A Potent Ingredient for Beautiful Skin
Rosehip oil is an absolute gift from mother nature herself to those of us who want an effective skincare routine that feels luxurious but doesn’t introduce synthetic chemicals into our bodies (or the environment for that matter). A Bit of Background
Rosehip oil is pressed out of a berry-sized fruit, normally red or orange in colour and produced by a specific wild rose plant that grows most abundantly in the Southern Andean Mountains. The medicinal use of rosehip oil spans over centuries, possibly dating as far back as the ancient Egyptians.
Within rosehip oil is a host of skin-nurturing compounds with therapeutic effects that read like the benefits of a highly-formulated commercial “wonder treatment”.
The Skin Benefits of Rosehip Oil
1. Hydrated skin
Rosehip oil is generous with the essential fatty acids including Omegas 3, 6 and 9. These nourishing fats help hydrate the skin by retaining moisture in the cell walls. Gamma-linoleic acid, in particular, is important for maintaining a healthy skin barrier.
2. Smoother Skin
The Omega fatty acids do more than just moisturise the skin, they also encourage normal skin cell turnover and healing which can improve appearance, reduce acne, and fade scars. Tannins help tone the skin by tightening pores.
3. Brighter complexion
Rosehip oil’s vitamin A (in the form of beta-carotene) and vitamin C encourage cellular regeneration which boosts overall radiance for a natural glow. Lycopene, a carotenoid that gives rosehip berries their lovely hue, also brings skin-lightening properties to the party of active ingredients.
4. Targets signs of aging and distressed skin
Vitamin A is also a retinol—a big deal in the skincare industry because of its ability to reduce hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles. And here it is occurring naturally in rosehip oil!
But vitamin A doesn’t get all the anti-aging credit; vitamin C helps skin retain its elasticity and supports collagen production. Together, vitamins A and C work to stop the formation of an enzyme, called MMP-1, that destroys collagen.
The overall symbiotic relationship of the active ingredients in rosehip oil help protect skin from photoaging and repair sun damage on a cellular level—but it’s still a good idea to wear sunscreen during long exposure to UV rays.
5. Anti-inflammatory
Rosehip oil contains bundles of antioxidants, including vitamin E, polyphenols and anthocyanin, that are known to have anti-inflammatory effects and protect against free radical damage.
6. Easy to Use
Rosehip oil is non-greasy and non-comedogenic so it tends to suit many different skin types (even ones prone to breakouts!) because it isn’t heavy and doesn’t clog pores. And since its beta-carotene and fatty acid molecules are small, the oil and its nutrients are easily absorbed by the skin cell membrane.
So it’s no wonder that all sorts of people, with all sorts of skin types, have fallen in love with rosehip oil.
