We all have special foods and things we do that make Christmas time unique and precious, and we can all get so busy that we can forget to look after our health. Here are a few tips from Organico Staff to help you make the most of the Christmas season, stay healthy, and also a few simple ideas to make your holiday more festive!
Jessie Field Marshall who is a Yoga Teacher here in Bantry (we are lucky to have her working in our Cafe too!) has been taking Udo’S Oil for the last couple of months and has really noticed the improvement in her joints. ‘My joints feel ‘oiled’ - more supple, not clicking like they often do in winter. And I have noticed a real change in my skin too - it’s softer, and my complexion seems much better. And Udo’s Oil is the only change I have made to my diet recently’.
Marta Sweirad, who works in our kitchen and is also studying Ayurvedic Herbal Medicine, says that in order to help her body cope with the delicious indulgence of Christmas she will be resorting to one of her favourite simple meals: ‘I like to eat organic short grain brown rice, with a drizzle of good quality Olive Oil and some Braggs Amino Spray (similar to soya sauce) on it - very simple, very plain, but it really helps my digestion. And over Christmas many of us can use a little help!
Lauren Evans, who works upstairs in our Cafe but is also a Physical Therapist (don’t we have a talented staff!) says her favourite thing to make with her niece over Christmas is the traditional natural air freshener made from an orange stuffed with cloves. ‘You take a nice organic orange, and a shed load of cloves, and you push them into the orange very very close together and they preserve the orange. Tie it up with a nice piece of ribbon and you have a lovely gift! And it’s a lovely thing to do with kids’.
Rachel (the creative force in Organico Kitchen) knows her energy will be taxed in the run up to Christmas because of all the (amazing!) spelt mince pies she will be making. ‘Red Lightning comes in a sachet and you add it to water. It’s full of Super Food extracts like Acai, Mangosteen, Goji and Noni juices. I reach for this when I am feeling tired it’s the start of a long day and I need a boost - and it’s also a life saver after a few drinks! Take it first thing in the morning after the night before and you will really notice the difference it makes to your energy’.
Elizabeth Ewing, our shop manager (and also a Healing Voice Coach and Stress Management Coach - she works locally with individuals and groups) says she is really appreciating the Pukka Teas at the moment. Pukka are an Ayurvedic Herbal Company who make some really amazing products. ‘I’m really enjoying Pukka Relax tea in the evening, I drink it about an hour and a half before bed and it leads to sweet refreshing sleep. As we get older this kind of sleep can become elusive. I like everything from Pukka - the Turmeric capsules are getting fantastic results from people with stiff knees because they seem to work so well as a gentle natural anti-inflammatory in this cold weather’.
Keith Hurley, our purchasing manager who is renovating his house on his days off, says he finds himself reaching for instant organic Miso Soup quite often during the day. ‘I have miso soup during the day when I am on the go - I find it keeps me hydrated and warm. I sometimes drink one in the early evening instead of reaching for a sweet snack - my sugar craving seems to disappear and I know it’s really healthy for me! The Clearspring brand is my favourite. Just add boiling water and drink once it’s cool enough!’.
Christine Meadows, who is a Nutritionist, says her favourite product of all time is Spirulina. ‘It’s a natural multivitamin, full of iron, full of chlorophyll, it’s a very good boost for people who don’t eat well or who have immune system issues. It’s great for sports recovery. We have recently started stocking Sara’s Choice Spirulina which is Organic, an Irish brand and great value. If you find the powder it hard to take try mixing it with pineapple juice, or just take tablets. The positive effects will outweigh the taste!’
Fleur, our outstanding Assistant Manager and an enthusiastic runner, says ‘the Trilogy Serum (CoQ10 Booster Serum) is my favourite skincare product at the moment. I put it on after a shower after exercise - when the blood vessels are all open - and it soaks in beautifully and my skin feels fantastic. Apparently once you are over a certain age alcohol based toners are no longer appropriate but serums are just right - toners can dry out the skin whereas a serum feeds and moisturises’.
