Well, it’s truly Autumn now, and Lucy and I are off to the toddler swimming group in the chlorine-free pool near Pearson’s Bridge. I can’t wait to see how she reacts to all the water – she loves water – and all the other toddlers (she also loves toddlers!)!
In October we are planning a baby-wearing morning in Organico Cafe, with Holly Hardwicke from Nurture and Bliss who will come with all her lovely slings to discuss the ups and downs of wearing your baby and let us try them out. We will also have tea and coffee and cake! We are currently looking at Wednesday the 13th from 10 ish till 12 ish.
We are still offering our fantastic offer on Little Comfort nappy packs, just call me on 027 51391 or email info at organico.ie and we can discuss your needs. If I’m not in work I will call you back (I have the privilege of only going in to work 3 days per week at the moment but am online most of the rest of the time!!)
We also have a good range of baby-related stuff in Organico – eco disposables (discounts on multi-buys), organic formulas, glass bottles, Slings, loads of body/bottom/bath care and lots of yummy foods. So if you are in the area call in, have lunch in our Cafe and if you want I will show you how the cloth nappies work…(Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays are best if you do want a demo; mail me to confirm).
All the best, Hannah

Have you ever heard of Keffir? It is a drink, made mainly from milk and a starter substance called ‘Keffir Grains’ that act like a yoghurt started and ferment the milk in a particularly health and I think very tasty way. It has been credited over the years with incredible health benefits ranging from digestive benefits to immune system benefits to anti-cancer and increased life-span. I cannot attest to any of those except digestive – it works wonders on a disturbed tummy!
The name Keffir comes from the Turkic-Mongol word ‘Kief’ which means ‘a good feeling’. This is why I am writing about Keffir – because drinking it makes me feel incredibly good. Taste wise it is smooth and creamy and sour and refreshing, a bit like a strong plain yoghurt. And it has all the health benefits of yoghurt and more – in addition to beneficial bacteria, keffir is said to contain many minerals & essential amino acids. Because the milk protein is broken down in the fermentation process it is much more digestible than milk in its original form. It can also be made from rice or soy milk.
If you have the ‘keffir grains’ Keffir is pretty easy to make at home – easier than yoghurt in fact. But getting the grains can be difficult! You need to find someone who has them and is willing to share. If you would just like to try it out then call in to Organico – we have a 500ml drink available that comes with our weekly vegetable deliver which is made with organic milk and is reasonably priced. If you don’t live near here look out for ready-made Keffir in a Russian or Eastern European food shop.
If you would like to read more about Keffir this site has some interesting information on its history and how to make it.

We are now re-launching Organico Baby Club as Organico Baby Zone. Come and find us on Facebook…thanks for all the support and lets say it together now: we love babies!
Maca is a recently-popular product that I have noticed people talking about – mostly for menopause symptoms, PMT, and increased fertility in men and women, but also as a superfood to give energy, improved adrenal function, better sleep, and help for mild depression. A friend of mine recently had surgery and has been taking Maca since she got out of hospital and says she is now ‘bouncing around’! Maca is a root found mostly in Peru and the Andes which has a long history of use as a staple food because it will grow in conditions that nothing else edible will grow. It has an incredible array of minerals and vitamins for one plant.
In Organico we have just started stocking Sara’s Choice Maca, which is one of the best Maca products available and is made by an Irish company based in County Meath. Available in capsules or in powder (which actually tastes great – I take mine with water every morning and I’m really fussy normally!), Sara’s Choice Maca is ideal for anyone with hormone issues or tiredness and sleep problems.

Exciting News! Our cool new Onya Steel Water bottles arrived today…We have recently decided to stop selling plastic bottles of water, for health and environmental reasons, and instead we are offering Irish water Fior Uisce in glass bottles or re-fillable stainless-steel water bottles, which are made from competely safe infinitely re-usable stainless steel which doesn’t rust or leach chemicals into the water and can be re-cycled if necessary (they are very useful so it shouldn’t really be!)
Several towns around the world have now become ‘Plastic-water-bottle-free-zones’, out of concern for the environment and for human health. They arrange for filtered water to be available from street dispensers and on shops, cafes, bars and filling stations. Will Bantry be next?

I made my first mayo last night! And it was delicious. I used this recipe by Allegra McEvedy (‘The Good Cook’, one of my favourite cookery books), though I added a handful of fresh basil instead of garlic. The resulting pale-green mayo went really well with our leftover roast chicken and cold new potatoes…
Ingredients
2 egg yolks
juice of 1/2 a lemon (I used a whole small lemon)
1 large garlic clove, finley chopped
1 teaspoon dijon mustard (smooth)
salt and pepper
150mls organic olive oil
150 mls organic deodorised sunflower oil
1 tablespoon lukewarm water
Blend or whisk yolks, lemon juice, garlic, mustard, salt and pepper. You want it pale yellow.
Very slowly add the combined oils, drizzling in and blending or whisking like mad. You want the mixture to emulsify or thicken as you go. When half the oil has been added, add you lukewarm water, and then continue to add oil a bit faster (you might be able to drop it all in at this point but I didn’t dare!)
Home made mayo lasts a ‘good fortnight’ in the fridge according to Allegra, though I think we’ll have this one eaten before then!
Problem-shooting: it the mixture begins to split, add some more warm water, just a few drops, which should re-emulsify it. If not, start again with a fresh egg yolk, and slowly blend the split stuff into it. If this fails, put it aside to add to mashed potatoes and buy a jar of ready-made!
Enjoy….posted by Hannah
