Colds and flu Remedies – Sambucol

In CategoryNatural Remedies
ByHannah Dare - Organico

Apparently, adults can suffer from up to 6 colds a year, some caused by viruses like the influenza or ‘flu’ virus. A patient feeling unwell with a cold or flu should always keep warm, drink plently of fluids like herb teas, and get as much rest as is possible. Viruses are transferred by sneezing so a handkerchief is advisable to stop you infecting others!

A quick tip on that note – on plane journeys, especially in the winter, you can be stuck next to someone sneezing and coughing for hours. What I always do is take a bottle of Coliodal Silver with me, a spray it in my mouth every half hour. This may sound a bit over-cautious, but one year I went to the UK by plane every month for 10 months and I nearly always came back with a cold!

Sambucol (extract of black elderberry)

In Organico Bantry we recommend different cold and flu remedies depending on the patient’s symptome, age, lifestyle etc., but one of the remedies always worth trying is called Sambucol. It’s a patented remedy developed by virologist Dr. Madeline Mumcuoglu, an Isreali scientist who observed the action of an extract of Elderberry in retarding the development of viruses of many kinds.

Elderberry (Sambucus Nigra) is commonly used as a food product for wine, pies and jelly. It’s leaves were traditionally used for pain relief and applied to wounds to promote healing. Other traditional uses include the treatment of infections and coughing. Elderberry contains many different flavoniods, indluding Quercetin, which help fight infections. Taken several times a day, elderberry extract has been shown to reduce the duration and severity of colds and flues. It may also be effective against the Herpes Simplex virus.

Recommended Dosage: 5 to 10 ml twice daily.

Contraindications: Not reccomended for people with auto-immune conditions.

If you are unwell for longer than a couple of days with a bad dose of the flu, please consult a medical practioner.

Kyolic-Garlic Superfood! Cholesterol, Candida

In CategoryNatural Remedies
ByHannah Dare - Organico

In Organico Bantry we recommend Quest’s Kyolic Garlic as the best garlic supplement. Kyolic Garlic is an aged garlic product which is made from organic garlic, which from the very start makes it differnt from other garlic products on the market. Aging garlic sounds like a strange thing to do but in fact it makes a stronger, more stable product which has more uses than garlic oil or garlic powder and is less irritating to the digestive system. Unlike most foodstufs, processing, and specifically aging, does miraculous things to garlic. It triggers the formation of a cascade of compounds that do not already exist in garlic.

Kyolic has been researched extensively for over 50 years, resulting in over 550 peer-reviewd articles reporting studies showing the following effects:

  • Cardio-protection – enhances and reduces a wide range of cardiovascular risk factors including elevated homocystine, serum cholerterol, triglycerides and platelet aggregation
  • Liver detoxification – protects the liver by quickly eliminating toxic chemicals. An effective heavey metal eliminant.
  • Immune -enhancement – enhances various exssential immune factors such as macrophages, T-lymphocytes, natural killer cells and anti-body generation.
  • Protection from oxidents and radiation – contains anti-oxident phytochemicals that prevent oxident damage.
  • Anti-stress and anti-fatigue – improvews physical strangth and reduces stress and fatigue
  • Anti-cancer – inhibits development and growth of tumours.
  • Anti-candida – anti-fungal properties
  • anti-aging and anti-depression -improves memory function, enahnces nerve growth and improves serotonin utilisation.

The conditions that Kyolic Garlic has been shown to help include:

  • Circulation problems including Reynaud’s Disease (in as little as 90 minutes)
  • Blood Pressure – Kyolic Garlic has been shown to reduce Hypertension (raised blood pressure) in as little as 3 days
  • Cholesterol – Kyolic has been shown to lower cholesterol levels over a period of 3 – 6 months
  • Candida infection – Kyolic has been shown to have powerful anti-fungal properties and to promote the growth of friendly bacteria, along with an anti-candid diet of course!
  • Anemia (in 61 % of patients)
  • AIDS – because of immune boosting properties
  • Cancer

It is reasonable to look at Kyolic as a substitute for a multi-vitamin, as it aids the digestive system, the nervous system, the circulatory system, it detoxifies the liver, is an anti-oxident, increases whith blood cells and lowers cholesterol.

Choosing the right Kyolic product is very important (300mg Kyolic is best for Candida infections) as is having the right safety advice (you should not take Kyolic if you are taking Warfarin for example). For information on alternative health call in to Organico and talk to one of our highly trained staff who can advise you.

Remember – always consult a qualified medical/health practioner if you have a health issue.

If you have a health question, a book you would like signed or would just like to meet one of the foremost natropaths of our time, come along to Organico on Tuesday the 29th of May at around 9am. It will be first come first served so come early!

On Monday the 28th of May Jan will be giving a talk in Rosscarbery on ‘How to Live a Healthy Life’. We have the tickets for this talk on sale in Organico (cost €8 – all proceeds donated to charity). Having met Jan in Dublin last October, I can vouch for him being one of the people best placed to give a talk on this subject. He has been practising as a natropath for 50 years, and still works full time despite being over 70. His energy level, the day I met him, was incredible. We were all at a weekend Tradeshow in the RDS< an event which is open to Healthstore members and the public as well, and is packed out from 11-6pm. Jan gave personal consultations in the morning, followed by a talk to a packed conference room, followed by more consultations. When I saw him leaving at about 7 that evening he was waving cheerily to departing visitors.

If you would like to hear Jan speak - and I can vouch for how inspiring he is - come to The Celtic Ross Hotel on Monday the 28th of May for a 7pm talk. Again, come early!

Save our Supplements – Setting Upper Safety Limits for Vitamins and Minerals

In CategoryNatural Remedies, News
ByHannah Dare - Organico

If you would like to help to protect your right to choose the amount of Vitamin C you can buy without being unnecessarily restricted by the EU, contact the following people and let them know your views:

  1. Mr Markos Kyprianou, The Commissioner, Directorate General Health and Consumer Protection, The European Commission, B-1049 Brussels, Belgium.
  2. Dr Brian Redahan, Director Consumer Protection, Food Safety Authority of Ireland, Abbey Court, Lower Abbey Street, Dublin 1, Ireland. www.fsai.ie

Some of the points you might want to include in your letter or email:

* What you are writing about :
The Food Supplements Directive & the setting of Maximum Levels of Vitamins and Minerals
* Who you are: As a single person or as a parent how do you feel about having your health possible jeopodised by the EU? For example, they would like to set the maximum limit for B6 at 10 mg/day, when people are safely taking 50 – 400 mg/day currently to treat common problems ranging from PMT to Asthma. How will this affect you?
* Express your concern at one of the possible motives behind this directive, which many think is linked to the large food companies seeing a new role in the market place for ‘fortified foods’, which would be especially in demand if the general public cannot buy their vitamins any other way.

Vitamin & Mineral Supplements under threat

In CategoryNatural Remedies, News
ByHannah Dare - Organico

As we speak, the European Union is in the process of introducing Europe wide regulations on maximum doses of vitamin and mineral supplements – and in particular what manufacturers and shops like Organico can say about the supplements we sell. Most shops and manufacturers are in favour of regulations, as we would not like to be working in a world where people can lie to the public about what a product does, but we are concerned that the proposed regulations are going to restrict consumer choice and impact negatively on health. We are most of us in favour of setting ‘upper safety limits’ based on scientific evidence, but not in setting them based on decades-old notions of what minimum levels of vitamins prevents life-threatening illnesses.

In Organico we believe in optimum health, not just in preventing illness. And we also feel that all of us should be able to treat our minor ailments in any (safe) way we chose – by using 1000mg of vitamin C for a cold, for example. But in other European countries this amount of vitamin C is prohibited, and in order to harmonise situations like this the European Union is trying to standardise maximum levels accross the EU.

Under the terms of Article 5 of the Food Supplements Directive (2002/46/EC), the European Commission will shortly propose levels of vitamins and minerals which it believes are the maximum that should be permitted for use in supplements. A Standing Committee of the Council of Ministers will then be asked to approve those figures.

Unfortunately it appears that the Irish foods regulatory authority (the FSAI) are supporters of the RDA principal (which as I touched on above allows only for the prevention of critical illnesses rather than the maintenance of good health) and has taken very little notice of the Health Food Industry’s submissions of evidence supporting the use of safe upper levels. Our industry association (the I.A.H.S.) is currently in talks with the Dept of Health regarding this issue. However we are now starting to take action at a local level.

Shortly I will post a pro-forma letter that can be adapted and sent to relevant parties, and a list of people to send it to.

Relaxation & Spiritual Healing West Cork

In CategoryNatural Remedies, Reviews, Therapists
ByHannah Dare - Organico

Pina is a Spiritual Healer who has been based in West Cork since 1999. People visit Pina for many different reasons – for relaxation; for relief from pain, grief, and exhaustion; or to recover their energy after a particularly difficult or traumatic episode. In Organico we refer people to Pina when we feel that their situation requires healing on a level that cannot necessarily be reached by herbs, supplements or physical manipulation.

An example would be a person who was having sleep problems which started just after a close bereavement – we can offer her some calming and relaxing herbal preparations but if she also visited Pina her recovery would be a lot more profound.

Pina’s own description of her work is as follows:

‘Pina is a spirit medium for healing who encourages the release of grief, shock, fears, emotional and physical pain and other trauma.

She uses a form of hands on healing, receiving guidance to help you towards regaining trust and inner strength.

In a session you are encouraged to make changes necessary for your personal growth to help you to restoring wholeness.

By recieving divine universal love energy and allowing the guidance of angels to work through her, Pina uses a combination of light, touch, sound and other shamanistic techniques. Blessed Be.’

To many people this will sound very unusual, to put it mildly! However, having had personal experiences of Pina’s healing, I can vouch for her authenticity, her discretion, and for the deep changes that can be felt after a session with her. She practices in Skibbereen on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays and a session takes approximately 1 hour and costs €50.
For information please contact Pina on (028) 51582 (for bookings from Dubin and Skibbereen) or for bookings in Cork please call Dervish (021) 4278245. Email pinalazara@gmail.com.

They are widely trusted and their research is second to none.

Over the next months we will be building up our range of Solgar products as we find out what our customers are looking for. Our staff are going to do Solgar’s retailer training as well, as their products are often unique and we need to be informed in order to advise our customers on them.

So far customer feedback has been very positive, especially on Celadrin which is an essential fatty acid product used in cases of inflamatory joint pain, and which several customers have told us is very effective.

Healthy Frying

In CategoryNatural Remedies
ByHannah Dare - Organico

The inspiration for this article was ‘Fats that Heal, Fats that Kill’ by Udo Erasmus (published by Alive Books).

‘Frying with oils once will not kill us, and so it seems harmless. Our body copes with toxic substances. But over 10, 20, or 30 years, our cells accumulate altered and toxic substances for which they have not evolved efficient detoxifying mechanisms. The altered and toxic substances interfere with our bodies life chemistry, our ‘bio-chemistry’. Cells then degenerate, and these degenerative processes manifest as degenerative diseases.’ (Udo Erasmus, 1996:125).

Udo Erasmus would prefer we never touched a frying pan, much less ate chips. However, most of us will find it hard to give up frying altogether, so it seems important to me to learn the better way to fry. And even more important, it seems essential to understand a little of the way frying affects (‘alters’) our foods, and the way altered or toxic fats affect our cells.

Frying is not recommended, because the temperatures used when frying foods are too high. When foods turn brown, they have been burned, and the nutrients in the browned material have been destroyed. Proteins turn into carcinogenic acrolein. Starches and sugars are browned – caramelised – through molecular destruction. Fats and oils are turned into smoke by the destruction of fatty acids and glycerol.

These temperatures are particularly damaging to the oils that are best for our health-oils such as flax seed oil that are high in Essential Fatty Acids. These oils are highly unstable and change, when they come into contact with high temperatures, oxygen and light, into free radicals, which cause all manner of health problems. Therefore what Udo recommends is that we save these oils for salads and use other fats for cooking that are more suitable.

Although frying cannot be recommended for optimum health, there are some fats that are more suitable for frying than others. Saturated Fatty Acids (SaFAs) are less valuable to our health but they stand up better to higher temperatures. The least damaging fats for frying with include coconut, palm oil and butter – in small quantities. But even when cooking with these oils we must be careful that they do not smoke, as smoke in this context is made up of destroyed fatty acids.

Unrefined olive oil is also suitable for low temperature frying, as are ‘high oleic’ safflower and sunflower oils, and refined peanut and sesame oils.

Traditional Chinese cooks, according to Udo, out water in their woks before oil, which keeps the temperature down below 100 degrees centigrade, and therefore does not destroy the EFAs in the oil. Another method used by European Gourmet cooks is to put the vegetables in the pan before the oil. This protects the oils from overheating, the vegetables from burning and supports our health better.

Summary:

Good fats for cooking:

  • Butter
  • Tropical fats
  • High oleic sunflower and safflower oils
  • Refined sesame and peanut oils
  • Olive oil

Best Methods for frying:

  • Put water, soya sauce, garlic and onion in the pan with the oil (garlic and onion contain sulphur which provides a measure of anti-oxidant protection)
  • Put your vegetables in the pan first – and never heat the fat up to smoking before you cook.
  • Minimise burning of food
  • Add plenty of EFA rich oil to your food after cooking, and eat plenty of anti-oxidant rich foods to minimise health damage due to free radicals (for example, seeds such as sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, and hemp seeds and oils such as hemp seed oil and flax oil).

Because we believe that organic food is always better, for you and for the environment, we would always reccommend that you buy organic oils whenever possible.
