Organico is delighted to be selling Onya Stainless Steel Bottles. Made from food grade 304 Stainless Steel and with a handy wide neck, these stylish bottles have been selling like hotcakes for people who don’t want to use plastic bottles for water.
Drinking water is really important, but plastic bottles are terrible for the environment, cost you a fortune, and in todays world are simply wrong. These bottles don’t need to be lined and will never retain or leach flavours. No matter how many times you refill them, no matter what you put into them, it will always stay fresh and delicious. You can leave them in the car on a hot day and the water won’t taste of plastic.
This handy 500 mls size is particularly popular for kids to take to school. Watch this space for other colours or call our shop (we have a small amount of stock left in various sizes, with more coming in in early October. Orders are being taken).

Organico now sells Nature’s Calcium by AquaCal. Nature’s Calcium is one of the best calcium products that we sell in Organico. It is made from a seaweed that grows off our coast and it provides a uniquely pure source of calcium. Because it is of plant (seaweed) rather than mineral origin, it is a much more suitable source of calcuim for the human body. Many calcium supplements contain the cheapest and most difficult to absorb calcium – calcium carbonate – chalk, in other wards – which has a very low absorbtion rate.

Hello to all brave parents out there who are considering Real Nappies! Don’t worry, it’s very straight forward, if it wasn’t I wouldn’t be using them myself every day. If you have the time, I would suggest coming down to lovely Bantry Town and booking a Real Nappy Consultation with me. I can show you exactly how the system works and we can discuss what, when, how many…no pressure to buy, but if you wish to, we stock Little Comfort Nappies and sell the Full Pack at a fantastic 20% off the RSP.
We also have loads of other baby accessories including Olives and Applesauce slings which have a useful newborn insert so they are ready to go when you are!
If you are considering this, the days consultations are available are Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays (Friday is a good day as the market is on and the whole town is full of life). You can make a nice day of it and take a walk around Bantry House and have a healthy yummy lunch in our Cafe!
My personal opinion is that it is better to already have your nappies before your little one is born, as for a considerable time after the birth (especially if this is your first!) any decisions other than ‘will I have a cup of tea?’ are very hard to make, and so are any journeys. So get all those jobs done now – while you can still think!!
If you live too far to call down I am available by phone and we can ship Full Packs for a small charge. Just email me your phone number and I will give you a call (But we recently had a visit from some lovely girls and their mum from Limerick West who had a good day by all accounts!).

How healthy is milk?? By Hannah Dare of Organico Bantry. (Published in the West Cork People October 2010)
We are constantly told that milk and dairy products are essential for our health. But what if that is simply not true? What if, instead, milk products are not suitable for adults and should be only eaten very rarely? This month I have been reading about milk and its connections to serious illnesses like breast and prostate cancer, and looking at whether it is actually a good source of minerals or protein. Given that I really enjoy cheese and milky coffee, this has been difficult to research, but I am more and more convinced that we should enjoy dairy products as a treat rather than as the backbone of our diet. Have a read and see what you think.

I’d like to start a new section of the website devoted to Simple Meal Ideas, meaning not quite recipes but more inspiration to help you decide what to eat at those times when you just can’t think! I’m planning to invite customers and friends to add theirs also so we all get to share each others’ tasty, quick and easy meals.
Tonight I made a warm Puy lentil rice salad with caramelised onions and loads of herbs, with veggies and feta cheese. The veggies could be roasted (for example peppers, aubergine, onions, courgette) or sauted (leeks, kale, cherry tomatoes and butternut squash) or any combination you have to hand – it’s nice if they are juicy and seasonal. If you wanted to dress it up you could make an aubergine gratin in a rich tomato sauce…it goes really well with the lentils and rice. You could leave out the feta then.
For the lentils and rice I cooked 1 cup of brown rice (with 2 cups of water in a pan with a lid for 35 minutes) and 1/2 a cup of puy lentils (in lots of water until al dente) and mixed them together with some caramelised onion (4 small red onions with a little oil over a low heat for 20 minutes). You drain the lentils before mixing them, and the rice should be cooked through. Then add a few handfuls of chopped parsley and corriander, a glug of olive oil, a little balsamic and lots of soya sauce and pepper.
Serve with a generous amount of crumbeld feta. The salad is great the next day also, just check the seasoning. Enjoy! By Hannah

Well, it’s truly Autumn now, and Lucy and I are off to the toddler swimming group in the chlorine-free pool near Pearson’s Bridge. I can’t wait to see how she reacts to all the water – she loves water – and all the other toddlers (she also loves toddlers!)!
In October we are planning a baby-wearing morning in Organico Cafe, with Holly Hardwicke from Nurture and Bliss who will come with all her lovely slings to discuss the ups and downs of wearing your baby and let us try them out. We will also have tea and coffee and cake! We are currently looking at Wednesday the 13th from 10 ish till 12 ish.
We are still offering our fantastic offer on Little Comfort nappy packs, just call me on 027 51391 or email info at organico.ie and we can discuss your needs. If I’m not in work I will call you back (I have the privilege of only going in to work 3 days per week at the moment but am online most of the rest of the time!!)
We also have a good range of baby-related stuff in Organico – eco disposables (discounts on multi-buys), organic formulas, glass bottles, Slings, loads of body/bottom/bath care and lots of yummy foods. So if you are in the area call in, have lunch in our Cafe and if you want I will show you how the cloth nappies work…(Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays are best if you do want a demo; mail me to confirm).
All the best, Hannah

Have you ever heard of Keffir? It is a drink, made mainly from milk and a starter substance called ‘Keffir Grains’ that act like a yoghurt started and ferment the milk in a particularly health and I think very tasty way. It has been credited over the years with incredible health benefits ranging from digestive benefits to immune system benefits to anti-cancer and increased life-span. I cannot attest to any of those except digestive – it works wonders on a disturbed tummy!
The name Keffir comes from the Turkic-Mongol word ‘Kief’ which means ‘a good feeling’. This is why I am writing about Keffir – because drinking it makes me feel incredibly good. Taste wise it is smooth and creamy and sour and refreshing, a bit like a strong plain yoghurt. And it has all the health benefits of yoghurt and more – in addition to beneficial bacteria, keffir is said to contain many minerals & essential amino acids. Because the milk protein is broken down in the fermentation process it is much more digestible than milk in its original form. It can also be made from rice or soy milk.
If you have the ‘keffir grains’ Keffir is pretty easy to make at home – easier than yoghurt in fact. But getting the grains can be difficult! You need to find someone who has them and is willing to share. If you would just like to try it out then call in to Organico – we have a 500ml drink available that comes with our weekly vegetable deliver which is made with organic milk and is reasonably priced. If you don’t live near here look out for ready-made Keffir in a Russian or Eastern European food shop.
If you would like to read more about Keffir this site has some interesting information on its history and how to make it.
