We advise preparing over the weekend to give yourself a chance to approach the cleansing week slowly and have certain things ready in advance. For example, if you are working all week, it might be good to make some batches of soup and freeze them so you can have a healthy light meal easily. Or if you don’t normally cook brown rice now is a good time to practice – rather than Monday night when you are tired and hungry!

Beef tomatoes are great for this recipe because of their size however any large organic tomato will do. You can play around with the fillings changing the cheese and herbs and veggies to suit you tastes and what you have available at home.

Organico Bantry is now on Facebook, and during the week starting the 17th of April we will be putting up daily cleansing meal ideas and menu plans. If you would like to follow our suggestions for 3 days or the full week become a fan or look on our website. We will also give the information out instore during that week. It’s much easier to do a cleanse with a little support!
Modern life tends to burden our digestive system. We eat unhealthy foods, we eat too much and we don’t give our bodies a chance to recover and flush out the toxins we ingest from our food, the environment and the alcohol we consume. Traditionally many cultures had fasts built into the year, like Lent or Ramadan. Unfortunately the tradition of fasting has waned in Ireland and this means that our digestive systems need a little break. Read more…
Please note: if you have a medical condition you shouldn’t make any changes to your diet without first consulting your GP or health practitioner.
If you are trying to eliminate Candida from your system, you have to follow a very strict diet for at least (in my experience) 2 weeks; but it really is the longer the better. You probably also have to take a number of supplements to help eliminate the yeast from your body. Please call in to the shop and discuss your supplement needs with one of our staff.
Foods to Eat: All vegetables except mushrooms (though you should go easy on the spuds as they become sugar very quickly and can exacerbate a candida condition), all lean proteins including fish, chicken, lean meats (all organic preferably or at least antibiotic-free), brown bread, brown rice, eggs, lentils, peas and beans, organic natural yoghurt, cottage cheese, apples in limited amounts. Flax seed oils, all nuts and seeds, rye or spelt crackers. Read more…
We are adding Little Comfort Real Cloth Nappies to our Online Shop. For members of our Organico Baby Club we are offering a great deal on the Little Comfort Full Pack, which contains all you need to make Real Nappies work. The secret is to have enough nappies so that you can wash every 2/3 days or twice a week, and the Full Pack allows this flexibility.
Little Comfort is an Irish company based in Donnegal. Their nappies are very well designed, with one size fitting new-born up to toddler, and are made from bamboo which is very absorbent. They are a great fit, and close with poppers, not a pin in sight! Each nappy comes with 2 boosters that pop in which make them very easy to dry. I can say from experience that these nappies are easy to use, even my husband recommends them!
Why Use Real Nappies?
Real Nappies save the environment – in Ireland approximately 600,000 nappies are used every day and the environmental impact of this hardly bears thinking about. Disposable nappies take 100’s of years to break down, not to mention the environmental cost in producing and shipping them. So using Real Nappies is a very easy way to reduce you carbon footprint.
Real Nappies also save you money. Read more…

Rachel and Hannah Dare’s Organico is top-notch, 24 carrot, top-of-their-game. A superb Bakery. Brilliant organic vegetables arranged like a still life. Great wines. A lovely Cafe with an ever-changing roster of local artists, plus lots of PC’s so you can gab away to your friends. Organico is not just a shop, it is a hub of activity and a hive of evergy, and it is one of the stars of the west cork firmament’
I hadn’t heard of Chia Seeds until about a month ago. My excuse is that I was out on Maternity Leave and this new ‘craze’ has all blown up in a very short time! However, Chia seeds have a rich history and a lot going for them so I think they are around to stay.
They originate in Southern Mexico, and were a significant component of Mayan and Aztec diets. They were used as a source of energy as well as a treatment for joint pain, sore skin and as a way of stimulating saliva flow.
From a nutritional perspective, they are an excellent source of Essential Fatty Acids, even more so than flax seeds. And because they have such a high antioxident content the oil stays fresh for a long time and unlike flax, they do not need to be ground for the oil to be ‘available’ to our bodies.
For the digestion, Chia seeds provide a rich dose of fiber, and when soaked quickly in water (5 minutes or so) they form a gel which is very soothing, and helps relieve constipation.
This gel also seems to slow down the absorption of carbohydrates which makes Chia invaluable to athletes, people trying to lose weight, and diabetics.
Added to water with lemon or lime juice they make a drink known in Mexico as ‘Chia Fresca’. They have a mild nut-like flavour and can be sprinkled on cereal, baked in bread or just downed in water.
I have found them to be a pleasant addition to my diet, and we are working on a new Health Bread with Chia, Spirulina Flakes, and other exciting ingredients! I’ll keep you posted – Hannah
We know all oils should be fresh, correct? Well, I certainly didn’t realise until recently that most Olive Oils for sale here in Ireland are old. Even the cold-pressed, extra virgin ones. According to Italian food culture, Olive Oil should be used within at most a year from pressing, which makes it the complete opposite to good wine which is better the older it gets!
We have just started stocking a really tasty fresh olive oil in Organico. Colletta Olivieri Oil comes from the National Park of Gargano, on the Adriatic Coast, and because of this the olives are grown without chemical (the family is in the process of becoming certified Organic but it takes 2 years). But what distinguishes this oil from the other ones we sell is that it is from olives harvested late last year, making it very fresh. We currently have 500 ml bottles (RSP €6.30) and 3 liter tins in stock (approx €29). And if you like their oil you can go and stay with the family in their Agritourismo Colletta Antonetta which looks like the real deal!
