The Fox and Chicken Dream by Toma McCullim

Organico Cafe is delighted to be exhibiting works by works by Toma McCullim and Astrid and Kirstin Walshe. Colourful, charming and upbeat this exhibition will appeal to all ages. Call in and view anytime before the end of April 2011.

Toma McCullim:
Toma holds a first-class honours degree in The History, Archaeology
and Anthropology of Art from the prestigious Sainsbury School of World
Art at the University of East Anglia. She has been selected as an
Invited Artist at this years Summer exhibition of the Royal Hibernian
Academy.
These new paintings are from a series called “My Little Eye”.
“In this series of paintings I wanted to include the child as well as
the adult viewer, to allow for a play of perspectives and meanings
within the work. It’s important to me that all members and ages of a
family can enjoy these paintings over the span of a lifetime and
more.”
Originally from Glasgow , Toma has lived in West Cork since 1992.

Astrid Walsh was born in Germany in 1976 but grew up in Ireland. She initially studied Sociology and German in Trinity College, Dublin. This was followed by a period working in Social Research and also with people with disabilities. Her work is led by her attemps to understand the workings of this world, a world which Michael Palin accurately described as ‘an absurd place doing lots of silly things’. Things did not become clearer by doing a degree in Fine Art in IADT, Dun Laoghaire some years later. Her practice is diverse and includes painting, drawing, illustration and video installation.

Kerstin Walsh – Statement

Imagine that each person has a question. One which comes up often in
their lives, which is like a distillation of the inquiry which guides
their life and their choices. If you had a question. What would it
be?

Mine, a two-headed question, is ‘Am I happy/ Are you happy?’ This
question has lead me down a certain path. When I was a child I used
to call my father, a Psychologist, ‘a doctor for crying and moaning’.
In pursuit of knowledge about happiness I naturally began to learn
about it’s opposite, studying Psychology, Sociology and English,
followed by more practical Social Policy and Social Work, then
Healing, looking for an answer to ‘crying and moaning’.

Working hard at the question, ‘Are you happy, and if not, what can I
do about it?’, I also started asking myself, ‘What makes me happy?’.
If we have one life, and this is it, what do I want to do? So I came
back to beauty. Beauty makes me happy. Imagination, creativity,
painting and drawing things I like to see, people, flowers, apples,
things! Sadness too.

At the moment I am using acrylics mostly and pencil and oil pastels
and coloured pencils and charcoal on paper. I like paper because I
can lean on it and I love the lines that you can make with pencils. I
like to play with balance. If somthing is too pretty or too balanced
I put something in which will make the image less easy, more real.

Natural Remedies for Hair Loss during and after Pregnancy

In CategoryBaby Zone, Natural Health, Natural Remedies, News
ByOrganico

Post Pregnancy Hair Loss is very common and can be very upsetting. It can be just part of the cycle of Hair growth, but it is still a good idea to make sure of your nutrient levels so as to prevent un-necessary damage to your hair.

1. Many women suffer post partum hair loss which can have a nutritional basis. Increase your intake of foods rich in zinc, folic acid and B vitamins while you’re pregnant, as it is theorized that pregnancy causes a slight deficiency in these nutrients. According to Nutrition for a Healthy Pregnancy, consuming dark green vegetables, extra-lean meats, whole grains and cooked dried peas and beans are good sources of these essential nutrients.

After checking your diet, you might take a multivitamin supplement daily, for example Solgar’s Prenatal Nutrients. I would also always suggest an Omega 3 Supplement – not specifically connected to your hair health but more in relation to general pregnancy health.

2. Another supplement worth considering is Biotin. Biotin is a necessary B-vitamin that plays a large role in healthy hair growth and is often lost during pregnancy, according to the Bastyr Center*. Biotin deficiency affects approximately 50 percent of pregnant women (it can cause certian birth defects if left untreated which is a good reason for taking a multi vitamin with plenty of Bs!) Biotin deficiency has also been shown to cause rapid hair loss un-associated with pregnancy so with any case of rapid hair loss it is worth trying. Take 3 mg of a biotin supplement each day or a strong B Complex.

3. When finished nursing A.Vogel Hair Complex can be very beneficial to take for a couple of months to nourish the hair and return it to health. Hair Complex contains natural sources of B Vitamins, Silicea, Zinc, and many more trace elements that are excellent for our hair.

4. Silicea from Hubner is also very helpful for people with weak hair or nails. Take a course of one capsule per day for 2-3 months.

5. Solgar Skin, Nails & Hair is a comprehensive formula specifically designed to help build collagen and keratin, major building blocks of hair, skin, and nails that can decrease with aging. Delivering nutrients like MSM internally may help support strong hair, hard nails, and moist, supple skin.

Most hair supplements need 2-3 months to work so don’t give up! Avoid tight hair bands and over brushing. Use natural hair products to nourish your hair and scalp – Jason do a Thin to Thick range of products that can be helpful, and in Organico we also recommend the Dead Sea Majik range for extra minerals.

I hope you found this article useful. Contact us if you have further questions! Hannah Dare.

Easy Spelt Pancakes for Pancake Tuesday!

In CategoryBakes and pies, Organic Food, Organic Recipes
ByOrganico

There are lots of ways of making pancakes and I like all of them, but sometimes I just want the pancakes my mother made. This recipe is pretty close, although I use Spelt flour instead of the wholemeal pastry flour she would have had. These pancakes are thin (though not as thin as Crepes) and you roll them and eat them with your fingers all sticky with lemon, honey or maple syrup. Of course you can use jam, argave syrup, or even sugar, and some people like adding bananas and berries…and the milk can be switched for soy milk or rice milk if you prefer.

Ingredients:

Enough for 4 people as a light brunch

250g Spelt Flour (a mixture of white and brown is nice) with a nice pinch of sea salt
2 organic eggs, lightly beaten
600mls approx organic milk

Lightly whisk the spelt flour in a bowl to get rid of lumps, then add the eggs into the middle of the flour and whisk in. Add the milk slowly. Try to whisk out as many lumps as you can but don’t worry too much – if you can let the mixture sit for about half an hour the lumps will mostly have gone.

For frying: a little sunflower oil and a little butter

To serve: at least some runny honey and a fresh lemon cut into quarters.

The first pancake is always a bit of a mess, it’s really for telling you how much mixture you need for your frying pan and how much oil. You want a thin coating, under a ladle full for a normal size pan, and you want to cook it lightly until it lifts off the pan at the edges (a couple of minutes at most). Keep them warm and keep cooking until you have used up the batter!

These pancakes can also be used as a main meal served with vegetables in a cheesy white sauce for example… you can make them a little thicker and keep them in a warm oven filled and rolled until ready to eat. Enjoy! Hannah Dare

We are delighted to be stocking Real Nappies made by Little Comfort, an Irish Company based in Co Donegal. Their nappies are made from a Bamboo mix, a highly absorbent very eco friendly material which wears very well. Even better, it’ a one size nappy, which means you can use the same nappy from birth to potty along with a waterproof cover that comes in 4 sizes (see my recommended pack below). This works out cheaper and more eco friendly all round, as you only have to buy one set of the nappies rather than 3 or 4 sets.

Hannah says - “I have been using these nappies for over a year now, and it is so much easier than I had expected. I spent ages researching trying to find the best nappy out there, but really I was scared that even though I felt I HAD to try them out, I wouldn’t be able to make the whole soaking/washing/drying thing work. Well, I don’t know why I was so worried, it’s absolutely fine! We use them about 80% of the time – all day but not at night (I have found an eco-disposable is the best thing at night – I like Nature Baby Care nappies).
